There are lots of books that I’ve given up on over the past few years. Sometimes I’m just plain old not in the mood for them, sometimes they really irritate me.

Here is a selection of the books that I did not finish (or DNF’d) that I’d consider giving another chance.

Three Dark Crowns

The is a young adult fantasy series following a set of triplet princesses who have to fight to the death to become queen. I know this has been a fairly popular series over the years, and I have heard a positive buzz about it.

However, I tried reading it a few years ago, and I just couldn’t get to grips with it. Maybe it was because I wasn’t particularly experienced with fantasy fiction back then. Maybe I just wasn’t in the right mind set for it.

I want to give this book, and the series, another chance because I know it’s a well-loved series. I reckon if so many people have enjoyed this, then it must be worth a second chance.

Dreamwalker

This is an adult fantasy book about dragons. I tried reading this around 2013 when I knew very little about fantasy fiction. The main problem I remember having with this book is that the dragons’ names were all Welsh, and therefore I couldn’t read them for anybodies business.

I honestly have no idea why I bought this book. I think I just wanted to experiment with fantasy and find something new to enjoy, without having done any research into the kind of books I’d like.

I think that having more understanding of fantasy tropes and the genre in general will really help me if I have another go at this book.

I’d love to give this book another chance, it’s not overly long compared to a lot of other high fantasy books, so it shouldn’t be too intense.

Priory of the Orange Tree

I think most people know about this book. It’s another high fantasy book about dragons. I don’t know a lot about it, except that it’s about two sides of a queendom that have opposing views on dragons. It also involves a sapphic romance.

I’ve heard lots of positive things about this book, but one reviewer who I really like says that they weren’t too impressed with the ending.

The main thing that puts me off about this book is that it is over 800 pages, and I have it in hardback, so it’s really heavy. I might see if I can borrow the ebook from my library or something.

I’ve tried reading this book twice. The first time I only got to about page 25, the second time I got to page 100. Hopefully on the third attempt I’ll actually complete the books.

Bunny

I don’t really know how to describe this book. It follows a student at university who befriends a girl gang who all call each other ‘Bunny’. The main character is invited to join the gang for drinks, and after that, things begin to get very weird.

I don’t remember when I tried reading this book. I think it might have been before the pandemic, but it might have been in 2021. Anyway, I just remember that the main character was really miserable about everything, and it annoyed me. But this might just have been a reflection of my own mood at the time. Haha!

The reason I’m thinking about giving this book another go is that I’ve heard a lot of positive reviews about it, and I’m still quite intrigued by the plot.

So there are some of the DNF books I’d like to try reading again sometime in the future. I don’t know if I will actually get to them at all. But I don’t think I should give up on any of these books completely until I’ve attempted them at least once more.

What books have you DNF’d recently? Have you read any of the books I’ve mentioned? What did you think of them if you did?

Until next time,

Love, Bobbi. Xx.

A book has to be pretty bad for me to DNF it. I used to read a lot of historical fiction, but I can’t stand it anymore, especially the WWII stuff. Maybe I just overdid it! I also have a hard time sticking with non-fiction, no matter how interested I am in the topic.

I find both those genres quite hard to read. Although I do tend to go for WWII fiction if I do read historical. Maybe I just like the modern history aspect, like, it’s so close to our times. I think a lot of the time it depends on my mood. If I’m not vibing with a book I’ll put it down. Then sometimes I just forget to pick it up again. Hahaha.
