Re-Reading The Hunger Games in One Weekend.

A few weeks ago, pretty much out of nowhere, I had the urge to re-read The Hunger Games.

I haven’t  read this book in years. I have a strange relationship with this book because I first read it when I was at university and was experiencing the lowest point in my depression.

In a way this book helped me through that time, but it also brings back some sad memories. So that was a weird experience.

Anyway, I picked this book up on the Friday afternoon, and finished it by the Sunday evening. I read 113 pages on the Friday, 137 pages on Saturday, and 202 pages on the Sunday.

Honestly, I’m so pleased with my reading that weekend. It’s been such a long time since I’ve read a book that fast. I really wish I could do it more often. I guess I just got really invested in the story, and because I’d read it before I was trying to reach certain points in the plot because I remember them being really good (even if some characters were killed in half a sentence. Lol).

I don’t know about you, but I love re-reading books. I do it all the time. I seem to be re-reading loads of books this year that I haven’t read since around 2015, including The Lunar Chronicles series, Caraval, and Etiquette and Espionage (I might have read that last one since 2015 tbh).

I just really enjoy revisiting worlds that I know I already love. I enjoy meeting the characters again, and I think sometimes it’s just nice to go into a story where you know what’s going to happen next, because you don’t have to worry about your favourite character surviving until the end.

Another throwback I had with re-reading THG was that I used my e-reader for the first time in years. In 2020 I was reading ebooks on my phone during my commute so that I wouldn’t have to take my books or e-reader out into the pandemic invested world (lol). But even before that, it’s been a long whle since I properly used my e-reader for anything. So it was again quite nostalgic to read from that screen and be reminded of the exact experience I had when I read THG before (even if the e-reader is quite old – I got it in 2013 I think – so it’s definitely outdated technology, and quite slow to download stuff).

Anyway, I loved reading The Hunger Games this time. It was such a fun call back to the dysopian fiction era of 2012-2016. I read so many dystopian fiction series back then, I got really into them. I’d also forgotten a lot of the details about the book. Literally, I forgot about Peeta. Completely. And Cinna. Lol.

I also had some of the plot details mixed up with the later books. So I think I’m going to need to get to the sequels quite soon. I’m really looking forward to reliving those books too. I’ll probably use my e-reader again because the nostalgia was kind of fun (not the whole ‘remembering the worst point of my depression thing’ but just remembering a time when I was at university and didn’t have to worry about big life things).

I’ve also thought about reading A Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes. But I haven’t heard a tonne of positive reviews on it. So who knows really.

Did you ever read The Hunger Games? Do you re-read books at all? Let me know!

Until next time,
Love, Bobbi. Xx.

I’ve never read Hunger Games or seen the movies!!! My most favorite series to re-read is Harry Potter. Even though the first HP book isn’t that lengthy, I could never polish it off in one weekend, even if I spent the majority of my time reading.

The first time I read the Harry Potter series it was e-books borrowed from the library. Eventually I bought physical copies and I was so giddy to discover little stars in the corners of each page! But now I’m back to exclusively reading on my e-reader. I don’t know exactly when I made the switch but it’s definitely been at least a few years now, if not longer, unrelated to the pandemic.

It’s funny that you mention the stars i the corners. I got them tattooed on one of my wrists. Haha!

I loved that series when I was younger. I can see why it appeals to a lot of people. It follows a lot of good tropes and archetypes. It’s definitely a good series for getting into fantasy, even as an adult. The series become more complex as it goes on.

I remember my mum always read the first three books to me when I was a kid, but then I wanted to read the fourth one, and she wouldn’t read it to me because it was so long, so I decided to read it by myself. I was only about ten, but it was the longest book I’d read at that time.

I used my e-reader a lot during Covid. Well, the e-reader app on my phone. I think it does help me to read faster than physical books. I can’t explain why though. But I do love having physical books on my shelves. I use them for decoration as much as for entertainment. Lol.

I definitely re-read books, and I also read almost exclusively on my phone using either the Libby app or the Kindle app. It’s just so convenient! The Hunger Games books were great, and I actually enjoyed Ballad. I just heard there is going to be a new book that takes place 40 years after Ballad. It’s set to publish next March if all goes well. Do you like the movies as well, or are you just interested in the books?

I saw all the movies once each a few years ago. I’d really like to watch them again, but don’t have any way to do so (they used to be on Netflix, but they’ve been taken off).

The first time I heard about the Hunger Games series was through a character named Cinna. He’s creative, handsome, and caring. It’s because of my love for Cinna that I read the books and watched the movies (starting with the prequel)
