September 2023 TBR

So far this year I haven’t managed to read more than two books in a month. Clearly this isn’t going to be my best reading year ever, but it will be better than 2022 (I had a nine month reading slump and read about thirteen books, eleven of them by the end of April). Anyway,…

So far this year I haven’t managed to read more than two books in a month. Clearly this isn’t going to be my best reading year ever, but it will be better than 2022 (I had a nine month reading slump and read about thirteen books, eleven of them by the end of April).

Anyway, this means that I don’t want to put a lot of books on my TBR if I’m not going to get to many, because I don’t want to cause myself unnecessary disappointment.

I’m also going on a two week holiday at the end of the month into the beginning of October, so that might mean I get less reading done. On the other hand, I’ll be on an eleven hour flight, so I might be able to read during that.

So, I think I’m going to put forward four books for the month, with the expectation of only getting to two of them.

My priority for the month is going to be Words of Radiance by Brandon Sanderson. I’m buddy reading this with my brother, and we are reading 20 pages a day to ensure we keep a steady pace without the pressure of a lot of heavy reading. We started this book a few days before the end of August, so we have a little headstart on it, but on day three I’m already behind on my daily reading target. Lol.

This is the second book to the Stormlight Archives series, which is a high fantasy story with multiple POV’s. It’s a difficult story to describe, espeically as it’s a sequel. In the first book we followed Dalinar who is the brother to the dead king, Shallan who is a scholar looking to learn magic, and Kaladin who is a criminal who has been put in the bridge crews, helping the army cross chasms as they head into battle.

I completely loved the first book in the series, Way of Kings, and I fully expect to love this book just as much. The characters were so detailed and incredible. The story was breath-taking. I can’t wait to get fully immersed in the world again.

The second book I want to read this month is Truly Devious by Maureen Johnson. This is a book that I’ve had on my TBR for so long now that it’s actually embarassing. This is a YA murder mystery novel set in an elite boarding school. We follow a girl who decides to invstigate the disappearance of the wife and daughter of the school’s founder. This book is the first in a trilogy.

I have heard so many good things about this series, and I’m really excited to finally be getting to it. I expect it to be a fairly easy read as it is aimed at a younger audience. It will also be a slight break from the epic fantasy.

The third book on my TBR for Semptember is going to be volume 1 to the Pokemon manga. I bought this book at the end of last year, and I keep meaning to get to it. I love Pokemon as a video game and a trading card game, I watched the TV series as a child, and I’ve heard some really good things about the manga as well.

I’m not a huge fan of mangas in general, but I know there are a lot of good ones out there. I’m hoping this series will help me to get into reading more mangas and graphic novels, and it will hopefully be a nice break between reading heavy novels.

The final book I’m going to put forward fo this TBR I haven’t quite decided on, but I think it’s going to be a re-read. The two options I have at the moment are Scarlet by Marissa Meyer, which is the second book in the Lunar Chronicle series, or Exile by Shannon Messenger, which is the second book in the Keeper of the Lost Cities series.

I think I’ll decide which one I want to go for nearer the time I go on holiday. I think having a book that I know fairly well will be a nice option when I’m on the aeroplane because I don’t know if I’m going to be able to cope with reading on the plane. Sometimes I get a little travel sick, but we’ll just see how it goes.

Anyway, The Lunar Chronicles series is a sci-fi retelling of a selection of fairy tales. The first one, Cinder is obviously Cinderella, this second one is Red Riding Hood, the third one, Cress, is Rapunzel, and the fourth one, Winter, is Snow White.

Basically this is set in a world where there is a colony of people who live on the moon, known as Lunars. Their queen is evil, and is trying to take over Earth through the Emperor of New Beijing. In the second book, Scarlet comes into contact with a wolf-Lunar hybrid while she is on a mission to rescue her grandmother.

I really enjoyed reading the Lunar Chronicles series when I first read them about eight years ago. But I also remember the second book being a bit slow. On the other hand, it will allow me to get to the last two books in the series, both of which I really loved.

The other series, Keeper of the Lost Cities, follows a teenager called Sophie who is a telepath, and discovers that she is an elf. She is taken into the elven world, and starts school there to help her learn to control her powers. This is a really cute series with some really lovely friendships and magic. I have only read the first two books before, so I want to re-read this second one so that I can continue the series.

Again, I’m not sure which one I’ll get to, but they’re both quite easy reads, so I’m not too fussed. I might save the other one for next month, we’ll just have to see how it goes.

So those are all the books that I’m thinking about reading this month. Hopefully I’ll read at least two of them. I’ll keep you updated on how it goes. 🙂

What are you planning on reading this month? I’d love to know!!

Until next time,
Love Bobbi. Xx.
