As someon who only recently got out of reading Young Adult fiction, I have often found myself struggling to read books from differing genres. So I need to start exploring a variety of book genres in the hopes of finding new interests.

It is easy for me to work out what I don’t like (romance and horror), but what feels harder is knowing which genres I would be willing to explore.

First of all, I have tried a couple of Young Adult thriller books. They were both by the sae author (Stephanie Perkins).

I quite enjiyed both of these books. I’m not really one to go for anything that could scare me, but with such short books, and such entertaining writing, I found that I got a lot of joy from reading these books.

Adult thrillers, however, have the potential to be much scarier, and that unsettles me. I’d love to be able to read some more of this genre, but I think I’ll have to do some more research into “tame thrillers for adults”.

Aother genre that I could do with reading more often is Sci-Fi. I completely have Fantasy down to the ground, but not so much with Sci-FI. And when I say the Sci-Fi genre, I mean full on spaceships, aliens, intergalactic explorations, time-travel. That kind of thing.

I loved watching Doctor Who growing up, and that really sparked my interest in Science Fiction. I’ve also read a couple of YA Sci-Fi books, namely The Lunar Chronicles quartet by Merissa Meyer, and the Skyward series by Brandon Sanderson.

These are two fairly different types of stories. The Lunar Chronicles is a retelling of four different fairytales, with aliens on the moon, and cyborg mechanics running around royal palaces. Whereas, Skyward is about a flight school for space cadets, during a war in a human colony in the dark recesses of space.

I also like the graphic novel Skyward (unrelated), about a verion of Earth where gravity is almost completely gone, and a teenage floats around cities trying to save her planet from evil corporate people and giant insects alike.

So those really interested me. I’m thinking of reading The Expanse series by James S. A. Corey later this year, and I’ve heard a lot of positive reviews about that.

Also if you’re looking for YA SF I highly recommend Jinxed by Amy McCullouch, which is more to do with AI robotic pets who also function like a smart phone, and link up to your brain.

One last genre I would like to attempt in the future is Manga. I know this can be argued as “not counting” towards reading goals and such, but I really would like to explore it a lot more.

I’ve attempted reading a couple of Manga, mostly I don’t finish them. In general I think I need more practise with reading graphic novels anyway, as I do tend to lose focus.

I bought the first volume of Pokemon Adventures recently, and I really think I could get into it if I really gave myself the time for it. It should be easy to understand as I’ve seent he show and played the games, so I know what’s happening for the most part. Perhaps starting with something easy like that and working towards other more peculiar options (I know how bonkers some of those series can be), shoud make things a lot easier for me.

I’ve heard that Orange is a good story, as well as One Piece, and My Hero Academia. My brother is really into his Manga and Anime, so I could easily go to him for advice.

So those are the three genres that I would like to explore further over the coming months. I’ll keep you updated on how that goes.

Until next time,
Love Bobbi. Xx.
